Summers in South Georgia get HOT! It’s time to buy sunscreen and popsicles and get in the pool! Along with the hours of rest, relaxation, and pure fun a pool can provide, there are also many dangers and regulations to think about. Pool safety is key!
Here are some pool safety tips to keep in mind as we approach the peak of summertime!
- Watch the kids. It is extremely important to ask children if they know how to swim before allowing them into your backyard to swim. Always have a responsible adult keeping an eye on children – never let them swim unsupervised, even for a few minutes. Educate your family, friends, or anyone who may be in your pool on what to do in case of an emergency.
- Use gates and locks. Barriers to enter the pool are required in Georgia, according to the Georgia Department of Health Regulations. These pool regulations can change and vary slightly depending on the county in which Georgia pool owners live; other states may have regulations as well, please check your local regulations in Appendix G of the 2012 International Residential Code, click here: https://codes.iccsafe.org/content/IRC2012/appendix-g-swimming-pools-spas-and-hot-tubs
- Check with your insurance agent. There may be additional liability coverage required with having a pool, including coverage in the event of a storms or other damages.
